When should I take the SAT/ACT?

Per federal law, Indiana is required to have a statewide assessment for accountability purposes. The SAT will satisfy this federal requirement, beginning with the graduation cohort 2023. Students are highly recommended to take the SAT or ACT at least once by the end of their junior year, preferably twice.

Most students will take the SAT for the first time during the spring of their junior year. That way, if the first SAT doesn't go as planned, it's easy to retake — over the summer, or during the fall of your senior year. Students should consider taking the test more than once as colleges will mix and match and take the best scores from each exam.  They will not mix between SAT and ACT, rather between each SAT exam and ACT exam for the better total score.

If a student is in band, it is imperative that they take the SAT or ACT at the end of their junior year due to conflicts between competitions and test dates during the fall.
